Final Project

Artist Statement

For the final project I continued using the same big idea of emotions. I also chose to do the diptych format because I believe it helped portray my idea well. The theme of my diptych dealt with the emotions I faced when deciding whether to transfer to Ohio University or stay here at Ohio State. It was a very big decision and I was torn between the two schools. Through the whole decision making process I was so confused and frustrated and just did not know what to do. I tried to portray this emotion by taking a picture of a friend from Ohio State pulling me one way and my friend from Ohio University pulling me the other way because that is basically how I felt. I tried to have pictures of Ohio State in the background to represent that I still attend the university. In the end I chose to transfer to Ohio University. I feel like that university is a better fit for me and I am a lot happier when I am there. I tried to portray this feeling of happiness at Ohio University by taking pictures of my friends and I at Ohio University and make them transparent and surround the Ohio University writing on the building. I also made my arms in the shape an O and a U to represent Ohio University similar to the O-H-I-O that is often used to represent Ohio State. Also, the “OS- who” represents how I will no longer be at Ohio State and I am happy about my decision to transfer to Ohio University.

1. My most significant accomplishment in looking at my midterm project is creating a meaningful work. I feel like this artwork really reflects my big idea of emotions and it is something that is very important to me. It was a very hard time for me after my uncle had passed and I tried to portray the powerful emotion I felt after he passed.

2. Coming into this art education class I had no photoshop experience at all. Every new concept and technique I learned in photoshop seemed challenging at first and I had to work at it a lot. At first I could not grasp the concepts of layers. I was never sure how to make selections and then create new layers and make adjustments. My first quiz on the left shows my little knowledge of photoshop and my inability to overlap layers and make adjustments. There was definitely too much open space in this artwork. Quiz 4 on the right shows my improvement. I have now mastered the concept of layers and I am able to make selections and adjustments to enhannce my artwork.

3. At the beginning of the course I was not worried about making meaning to my artwork. It was more about learning photoshop techniques and trying to master them. Throughout the quarter I learned about how important it is to have meaning to your artwork. In the examples below, the flower on the left had no importance to me, it was a quiz about selections. For that artwork I just focused on making detailed selections and worked with image adjustments. On the other hand, my midterm project on the right was more than just trying to perfect photoshop techniques. It was about trying to portray a meaningful idea. Unlike the flower, my midterm project was important to me and had powerful emotions and feelings behind it.
